Following months of restrictions, it has been great to see high streets thriving once again. Last week, I took the opportunity to visit local business owners on Ruislip High Street, alongside two of the three excellent West Ruislip councillors, Devi Radia and Philip Corthorne.
Firstly I visited Homeflair, a long-standing paint and hardware shop on the high street. As it is classed as 'essential retail', the shop has fortunately been able to remain open throughout. Speaking with the owners, it was really pleasing to hear that business has continued steadily and, despite some supply issues caused by the pandemic, it was good to see the shelves fully stocked.
I also met with Gordon, the owner of Action Replay Sports, and was amazed to learn that the shop has been on the high street for close to 30 years. It's a real testament to our community, who support and cherish our independent businesses that shape the unique character of our high streets. Sadly, the pandemic has thrown up some real challenges, but it was great to hear that government grants and business rates relief have been a real lifeline and vital to ensuring small businesses, like Action Replay Sports, outlive the pandemic and continue trade on the high street.
It was also a pleasure, as always, to visit Red Onion café. As a hospitality business, they have been hit hard by the pandemic but, despite these challenges, it was pleasing to hear from owner Natalie that she has been able to retain all her staff due to government support, and I very much look forward to seeing a full reopening later this month.
As we continue to open up, I am really looking forward to getting back out on to our high streets to chat with more businesses and hear of their experiences.
