The incredibly sad news of the abuse suffered by Arthur Labinjo-Hughes has brought into light the crucial role played by social workers. I was very pleased that the Education Secretary came to the House on Wednesday and I was keen to ask whether he felt the powers held within the Children Act went far enough and whether they were in need of updating, in particular the role that could be played by schools as a safeguarding partner. While I understand the need to wait for the recommendations of the review, I was pleased that the Secretary of State has not ruled out legislative changes if needs be.
